Can’t Break Me
Copyright © 2009 words and music by Dean Batstone
One long train out on the trestle
I’ve been waiting for that call
4 long pulls, shaky windows
Wake this man about to fall
I’ve got a brother thinks I’m shallow
Got a sister thinks I’m free
I’ve got a baby, loves a cool rain
I’ve got myself this shady tree
Push this man off of the mountain
You’ve got yourself a mountain without me
Lost again, but then, who’s counting
I don’t break that easily
You can’t break me
Now I’m rolling over bridges
I thought bad judgment had burned down
And I’m riding this broken highway
But I love that dirty sound
Push this man off of the mountain
You’ve got yourself a mountain without me
Lost again, but then, who’s counting
I don’t break that easily
You can’t break me
What’s a flat tire when you’ve got friends
What’s a man who never bends
What’s a highway that never ends
But a road to ride again
Got my Shovel deep in the white line
Gonna chase that big steel down
‘Powderfinger’ in my back pocket
I’m a train wreck, glory bound
Push this man off of the mountain
You’ve got yourself a mountain without me
Lost again, but then, who’s counting
I don’t break that easily
You can’t break me

Lay Me Down
Copyright © 2009 words and music by Dean Batstone
Every time these wheels slow down, yeah, I can feel the weight
Baby, I can’t wait to lay this burden down
The grey and steel and golden grain and neon miles
Wash into the sea without a sound
A grain of sand caught in the tide
I’m torn between the earth and sky
I fight to get my feet back on the ground
Comes you, my love, to
Lay me down, strip away
All the remnants of this day
Wash the fight from my skin
Let the silence fold me in
‘Til I hear nothing but the sound of your breath on me
Lay me down
Sometimes I think this world just wants a piece of me
Baby, all of me wants peace in me right now
Your nestled heart and open eyes and easy smile
Wrap me in the only peace I’ve found
My hardness breaks beneath your touch
So few words can mean so much
I try to speak, but I can’t make a sound
Comes you, my love, to
Lay me down, strip away
All the remnants of this day
Wash the fight from my skin
Let the silence fold me in
‘Til I hear nothing but the sound of your breath on me
Lay me down

The Leaving Kind
Copyright © 2009 words and music by Dean Batstone
The sunglasses you trashed slide back and forth across my dash
A cold reminder of that road trip to LA
I light a cigarette and baby, I don’t even smoke
Another piece of you that I can’t seem to shake
That’s my mistake ‘cause
You’re the leaving kind
You’re the leaving kind
Leaving doors ajar and empty bars and everything you can’t fix with a smile
That’s your style
What’s that sound, love
Coming down, love
I’ll see ya ‘round, love
You’re the leaving kind
I just shake my head, change the channel on the screen
Brace my back against the wall, try not to think
Now I’m talking to myself, I can’t believe I took you back
I’m such a sucker for a smile and a wink
Hey, where’s my drink
You’re the leaving kind
You’re the leaving kind
Leaving doors ajar and empty bars and everything you can’t fix with a smile
That’s your style
What’s that sound, love
Coming down, love
I’ll see ya ‘round, love
You’re the leaving kind
What’s that blowing in the breeze
Another note you left for me
Stuck to my windshield with a lipstick kiss
That’s what I’ll miss
You’re the leaving kind
You’re the leaving kind
Leaving doors ajar and empty bars and everything you can’t fix with a smile
That’s your style
What’s that sound, love
Coming down, love
I’ll see ya ‘round, love
You’re the leaving kind
Leaving doors ajar and empty bars and everything you can’t fix with a smile
Leaving serenades in broken time and dusty words that I can never rhyme
Leaving sorrys you forgot to say and conversations dangling out of time
Leaving diaries without a key, empty bottles spelling out goodbye
Leaving photographs taped to the door, sheets half crumpled on the floor
And me
me.

Heavy As A Heartache
Copyright © 2009, words and music by Dean Batstone and Jim Weider
No one’s perfect, especially me
I don’t even try to be
In all my mediocrity you are golden
A lighter heart might walk away
Afraid to chance that I might fail
If what won’t kill me makes me strong
Then strong for you is what I’ll be, ‘cause
There’s no weight as heavy as a heartache
There’s no middle ground with us
So I push harder for your trust
Yeah, I’ll give it all or bust
Hear my heart and not my head
Afraid of love, well, that ain’t me
Afraid to loose, well, I might be
Losing you could bury me
Beneath a lifetime of regret, you know
There’s no weight as heavy as a heartache
So bring it on, I’m strong enough
To carry us and maybe, love
We just might make it past the touch
Yeah, bring it out, the very best
I’d rather fail then miss the test
Forsake a heartache for your love
There’s no weight as heavy as a heartache

Goodnight Radio
Copyright © 2009 words and music by Dean Batstone, except where noted.
We piled in the car at Jimmy’s and headed out the 14th line
Wasting no time getting wasted, parked beneath the billboard lights
They called “down on the corner”, they called “out in the street” [1]
They called across America, they called to you and me
DJ shouts “Stop children, hey now what’s that sound” [2]
That’s just “The Sounds of Silence” [3] and progress crashing down
Caught up in our own fable, we watched the tower blow
The day the music died again, we sang Goodnight Radio
Ch: Choir of Ghosts singing harmony
Marching band moving way too slow
Sea of stars on a silver screen
We sang Goodnight Radio
Annie started crying like she was overcome with grief
Or one too many coolers and it brought her to her knees
So “take a load off Annie” [4], so someone took a drink for free
“Check out any time you like”, but Annie, “You can never leave” [5]
Every car on the horizon tuned to 101.2
All along the relay towers the sheriff kept a view
They counted down the hour, then they blew tower 21
They called “Goodnight America, don’t you know me, I’m your native son” [6]
Just as the sky closed over the wind began to blow
No one sang “Who’ll Stop the Rain” [7], so we all turned to go
Somewhere north of Red Hook, “seeking shelter from the storm” [7]
We drove the Honda to the levy, ‘cause the Chevy would not go
Business men they drank their wine, plowmen drank their pay [8]
Sheriff came to shut us down, he said we could not stay
But “tramps like us, baby, we were born to run” [9], so we ran away
“Video killed the radio star” [10], downloads the DJ
“Only love can break your heart” [11], “music save your mortal soul” [12]
Now the levy is a skateboard park, the farms a big box store
Hope Neil Young remembers, we all could use him now
Bring tequila for the tractor and some poetry for the plow
“A Heart of Gold” [13] for Dylan, ‘cause he’s “blowin’ in the wind” [14]
and a voice for those without one, the day the music died again.

Princess
Copyright © 1983, words and music by Dean Batstone
I met you on the west coast in a bar they called ‘The Other Side of Town’
Once I tried to bring you close, but it’s hard with all those other guys around
Then you climbed so fast, never looking back
I knew in my minds eye the words I’d say, but my eyes just couldn’t speak those words
I can thank a lady for her smile
I can teach the man the words to sing
I can tell the children ‘don’t stop asking why’
But I can’t tell you anything
I followed you to Calgary where people came in thousands just to look
I thought how much you looked just like a princess in my childhood picture book
So proud and tall, yeah, you showed them all
Just when I thought I could walk away, you flashed a glance
A glance was all it took
I can thank a lady for her smile
I can teach the man the words to sing
I can tell the children ‘don’t stop asking why’
But I can’t tell you anything
It seems like years ago you left our town, a girl so liberal and free
I guess the folks at home were right when they voted you most likely to succeed
Now I tell my friends, hey, I knew you when
But if you should have a change of heart, or if you fall, you know right where I’ll be
I can thank a lady for her smile
I can teach the man the words to sing
I can tell the children ‘don’t stop asking why’
But I can’t tell you anything

Waiting For The World
Copyright © 2009 words and music by Dean Batstone and Jim Weider
Thought I was way behind, yeah, behind the times
Just a motel falling down in some lonely one heart town
Where the trains don’t stop and the whiskey’s not
And your name is all you’ve got and you’re not looking to be found
Tick, tock time take me where I’m bound
Can’t speed up and I can’t slow down
Day don’t end ‘til the sun goes down
So I’m waiting for the world to come around
Yeah, I’m waiting ‘til the world comes back around
I could play the game, give them what they need
What good’s an Ivory Tower if it brings me to my knees?
Clinging vines grow tall, into every crack
Clinging people, they grow blades, then stab you in the back
Tick, tock time take me where I’m bound
Can’t speed up and I can’t slow down
Day don’t end ‘til the sun goes down
So I’m waiting for the world to come around
Yeah, I’m waiting ‘til the world comes back around
The time keeper knows how to walk that line
Past the sweet smiles and the brave hearts and the young girls eyes
But the heartbreaker always falls behind
So I’m walkin’ ‘til it’s my ....
Tick, tock time take me where I’m bound
Can’t speed up and I can’t slow down
Day don’t end ‘til the sun goes down
So I’m waiting for the world to come around
Yeah, I’m waiting ‘til the world comes back around

No Angels
Copyright © 2009 words and music by Dean Batstone
I will always love, I will always, I will...
Oh, you’re such a pretty one
You’re an angel, most times that’s alright
I don’t need your beauty
I don’t need a saviour
Don’t be my angel tonight
Hold that thought
I wanna ride until the daylight fades
To dirty grey and yellow broken lines
Judge me not
If I can’t be me I can’t be us
And girl, that just leaves blood & rust & time
Oh, you’re such a pretty one
You’re an angel, most times that’s alright
I don’t need your beauty
I don’t need a saviour
Don’t be my angel tonight
Draw the line
Then step over it to get to me
To get to me, girl, you don’t have to try
Draw the blinds
Then lead me to the edge of night
And stay until we fall over the line
Oh, you’re such a pretty one
You’re an angel, most times that’s alright
I don’t need your beauty
I don’t need a saviour
Don’t be my angel tonight
Close my eyes to stop the burn
Close my mind to all I learned
Close your arms around me, baby, hold on tight
Twist the grip, push one finger to the sky
Oh, you’re such a pretty one
You’re an angel, most times that’s alright
I don’t need your beauty
I don’t need a saviour
Don’t be my angel tonight

It’s Gone
Copyright © 2009, words and music by Dean Batstone
She had a way, it was not mine
We had one day, that was a time
Whatever’s left was left behind
It’s gone, it’s gone
I heard a song, now lost in time
The words were stolen, now they hide
Its beauty was it was not mine
Now it’s gone, it’s gone
Old love, break me down
One song, take me down
I bang my head, I burn my lies
I pray for light for darkened eyes
I chase the peace that is not mine
It’s gone, it’s gone
My faith it torn, my voice is worse
I shook the ghost, but not the curse
I’d leave the rest, for what it’s worth
But it’s gone, it’s gone
Cold moon, hold me down
Angel, shine me down
Then comes you to strip away
All the remnants of this day
Wash the fight from my skin
It’s gone, it’s gone
Woman, lay me down
Old flame, burn me down
Warm wine, roll me down
Young love, play me down
Steel wheels, ride me down
This song, sing me down
One heart, smile me down

Harder Man
Copyright © 2008 words and music by Dean Batstone
Once in every life there comes a time when we all try
To reach a star that’s just too far and we fall right where we are
Not every man can fly, it only matters that you try
So pick yourself back up, my friend, and try again
Once in every heart there comes a love, right from the start
Like no love you’ve ever known and your heart is finally home
But passion burns the walls and from the ruins you finally crawl
Well, your broken heart will mend, you’ll love again
That’s the harder man
That’s the harder man
Once in every life your heart is touched by ancient eyes
They share the wisdom of their time, for age is not a crime
Just when you understand, there time has come, alone you stand
Well, they never died in vain, you’ll meet again
That’s the harder man
That’s the harder man
Once in every life you’ll have a dream where it’s alright
To stand alone with who you are and to only go so far
For all that matters in the end is that all the love you send
Returns in gold, measured ten fold to give again
That’s the harder man
That’s the harder man
