Streetalk 04:29
Street Talk Copyright 1982 words and music by Dean Batstone Kicking down the sidewalk you hear the street talk I guess it never stops You hear the latest bullshit and it won’t quit Then you hear another name drop Davey’s got a new girl with blonde curls They’re cruisin’ in the rag top Billy just got busted, well he must have ‘Cause they took him to the cop shop Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah I guess it’s true ‘cause you said so Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah Well I guess you should know Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah I guess it’s true ‘cause you said so Street talk. Willy and the Poor Boys stopped making noise ‘Cause the rockers took the corner They’re dancing down at Ringo’s to the light show Where the computer takes your order Kelly’s doing a brain fade…she had it made ’Til the pusher took her pennies Jodie says he’s content in the government But then he ain’t getting any Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah I guess it’s true ‘cause you said so Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah Well I guess you should know Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah I guess it’s true ‘cause you said so Street talk. Hey hey, you can spare me all of the facts Hey hey…and the knife in the back Cindy’s by the street light, she’s an ex-wife Looking for some action Ian’s got a new band, he’s a front man Now they’re a main attraction Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah I guess it’s true ‘cause you said so Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah Well I guess you should know Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah I guess it’s true ‘cause you said so Street talk.

Dancin’ On The Strand Copyright 1984 words by Dean Batstone and Doug DuCharme and music by Dean Batstone Walking under windows Calling out the door-o Running between cars and Dancin’ on the strand Living in the moment Laughing at the accents Shouting at the girls and Dancin’ on the strand We go Dancin’ on the strand Leaving with a reason Everything’s in season I’m checking out the clubs and I’m dancin’ on the strand Listen to the noise as Guitar licks thrill the boys I take the night in hand and I go dancin’ on the strand We go Dancin’ on the strand Watching while the night breaks Learning all the best fakes I’m doing double takes and I’m dancin’ on the strand Driving through the cool night I’m thinking that I just might Take in one more band and Go dancin’ on the strand We go Dancin’ on the strand. Everybody’s dancin’ on the strand Look at me, I’m dancin’ on the strand Everybody’s dancin’ on the strand.

Laughing Outside Copyright 1983 words and music by Dean Batstone You caught me laughing to myself, no explanation You heard me singing with words of jubilation I look at you and my heart is filled with wonder You are my love and the power that I’m under Just look in my eyes I’ve got no tears to cry As the world passes by I’ll be laughing outside. So why so sad, it’s not that bad, there’s still tomorrow Lets songs of gladness drown your words of sorrow I’ve got a plan to deliver us from burdens Drop your worries and fears that got you hurtin’ Just look in my eyes I’ve got no tears to cry As the world passes by I’ll be laughing outside. So come on, don’t let the darkness keep you Sing out, those blues’ll never beat you Look up, when the sky is full of thunder Let it rain, it’ll make the sun look brighter Just look in my eyes I’ve got no tears to cry As the world passes by I’ll be laughing outside.

Reckless Freedom Copyright 1982 words by Dean Batstone and Doug DuCharme and music by Dean Batstone I see a smile that’s traced by guilt And your eyes say no tomorrow I can’t believe your words, you speak Of times all bound by sorrow In your restless search for truth Where did you think you’d find it? In the passion of one night Or maybe the hollow of you spirit Let’s have another glass of wine Let the world spin with no reason Let’s take this night and run With the wind of reckless freedom You fought so hard and still you lost All your slogans fell like thunder You knew the lies, you knew one truth And your heart could seek no other Let’s have another glass of wine Let the world spin with no reason Let’s take this night and run With the wind of reckless freedom So where’s it gone you ask yourself For there was once you thought you had it Each time you’ve tried to grasp it’s life Well it dies, or you just face it Let’s have another glass of wine Let the world spin with no reason Let’s take this night and run With the wind of reckless freedom Let’s live it all and live it hard Together with no reason We’ll take this night and run With the wind of reckless freedom.
5.
Black and White Copyright 1984 words by Dean Batstone and Doug DuCharme and music by Dean Batstone Beauty alone won’t redeem you There’s no justice that we can save Even the best love may leave you And faith can be your slave So where’s the black and white Where’s the black and white Where’s the black and white How can you tell me you’re right Where everything’s grey tonight. What peace do we know except post-war? No tomorrow ’till we kill today Time may give us what we ask for Tomorrow might take it away So where’s the black and white Where’s the black and white Where’s the black and white How can you tell me you’re right Where everything’s grey tonight. The only questions worth thought go unanswered The only promise worth making we waste We long for the past and its burdens What’s a window if it’s got no shade So where’s the black and white Where’s the black and white Where’s the black and white How can you tell me you’re right Where everything’s grey tonight.

Can’t Shake That Beat Copyright 1984 words and music by Dean Batstone I splash my face with cold water I scrape my beard with a rusty blade I put on my T-shirt and my rolled up jeans Then I give last night’s beer a taste I take the back door down the alley I’ve come to kick you out of bed I’ve gotta put the record on your stereo Hey Joe, it’s dancing in my head I gotta hear that song The one we heard last night I gotta hear that song It sounds so sweet I gotta hear that song That’s on the radio I gotta hear that song I can’t shake that beat. I drag you out into the daylight We run the tunnels up the street My shoes are kicking up the sidewalk This pavement’s burning up my feet Into the diner on the Midway My quarter slides in the machine The notes music fills each corner Hey Joe, that’s the song I mean I gotta hear that song The one we heard last night I gotta hear that song It sounds so sweet I gotta hear that song That’s on the radio I gotta hear that song I can’t shake that beat. The night time finds us at the Roxy The girls are checking out our jeans They’re bumming’ smokes, but I don’t got ‘em Just breath the air, the smoke is free The band is cookin’ ‘neath the spotlights My body starts to feel the heat They strike a chord, it’s so familiar Hey Joe, that’s the song I mean I gotta hear that song The one we heard last night I gotta hear that song It sounds so sweet I gotta hear that song That’s on the radio I gotta hear that song I can’t shake that beat.

Mystery To Me Copyright 1983 words by Dean Batstone and Doug DuCharme and music by Dean Batstone and Barry Meredith A flash bulb flares See the photographic stares Held naked for the moment I’m not sure what the night meant Another image burns Will the ladies ever learn? Phone rings on the floor A solitary key turns in the door It’s a mystery to me How the heroes come up clean It’s just a mystery Life and fantasy Played out by you and me For the world to see It’s a mystery to me. A secret passion play The world’s a candid stage Some enjoy the heat Some prefer the view from the back seat Directed from a distance Critical resistance Writer cries, words at stake Casts of laughter, words threaten to break It’s a mystery to me How the heroes come up clean It’s just a mystery Life and fantasy Played out by you and me For the world to see It’s a mystery to me. Motions caught in time Big screen pantomime Hero lives, hero dies Lady in the aisle seat cries It’s a mystery to me How the heroes come up clean It’s just a mystery Life and fantasy Played out by you and me For the world to see It’s a mystery to me.

Count On Me 03:13
Count On Me. Copyright 1983 words and music by Dean Batstone If I said that I would take you out walking Then girl, you better put your best shoes on ‘Cause I’ll be at your door like a hundred times before Pounding my heart out like a song If I said I wouldn’t leave you in the night time Then baby, you can write that in a stone Put on you finest rings and dawn your angel wings Tonight I won’t be leaving you alone You can count on me When the world is on your shoulders, count on me You’ve been paying all your lifetime, but babe, my love is free And I’ll love you girl forever Count on me. If lately I’ve been acting kind of distant That’s only ‘cause I’ve been so far away Pulling on these chains and living with the pain Of knowing you wanted me to stay So if I say I’m coming in the morning Girl, you best be rising with the sun ‘Cause I’ll be at your door like a thousand times before Forever, your shadow on the run You can count on me When the world is on your shoulders, count on me You’ve been paying all your lifetime, but babe, my love is free And I’ll love you girl forever Count on me.

Bye Bye 04:36
Bye Bye Copyright 1982 words by Dean Batstone and Doug DuCharme and music by Dean Batstone Hey Julie, my childhood dreamer Are you still thinking you’ll break this town Are you still leaving them behind as you go They’re all so slow Have you spent all the hope you borrowed Is there room in your plan for this man Well, there’s no one could tell you your life Was in their hands But it’s a much better place that you go As you’re leaving the ones who don’t know And you’ll never be bored, or have your pleasures ignored Or misplace a feeling, or feel unappealing You’ll never need lies, or tears to cry So bye bye Baby, bye bye. Last night I saw some of your pictures I see you best colour’s still blue But the one thing I don’t understand Is why they’re all of you? Like an artist true to her subject You’re a self portrait on a cross You’re someone who’s winning the fight And I guess it’s my loss But it’s a much better place that you go As you’re leaving the ones who don’t know And you’ll never be bored, or have your pleasures ignored Or misplace a feeling, or feel unappealing You’ll never need lies, or tears to cry So bye bye Baby, bye bye.

about

Recorded in 1984 at Altair Four Records [Lanark, ON] mostly live off the floor, it was an attempt to capture the new, live trio sound in a follow-up to the album 'Batstone', which featured some studio players. This record features an 18 year old James Lalley on drums, Barry Meredith on bass and harmonies and Dean Batstone stepping into the role of electric guitarist...we were young and fearless, if not naive...The track 'Count On Me' features the late Eddy Bimm on piano...a huge talent and a great guy.

credits

released April 20, 1984

Recorded and mixed by John Cybanski, it was never released, as the label owner, Derek Markle, lost a battle with cancer at the age of 38 and unfortunately for all involved, that was the end of Altair Four Records and my first recording contract.
